More "unlimited" texting options for Filipinos

Globe Telecom recently introduced its SUPERUNLI ALLTXT25, which provides unlimited text service for a day to all networks, from Globe, its subsidiary Touch Mobile, and rivals Smart Communications and Talk 'N Text.

The promo, which is available to prepaid users, costs P25 per day. It started officially rolling out on July 15. In addition to the unlimited text for one day, the service also includes free mobile browsing for one hour. This new promo would be Globe’s most premium text promo, the other being SUPER ALLTXT which costs P20 per day.

Peter Bithos, Globe Telecom Senior Advisor for Consumer Business, said their latest unlimited offer is targeted at encouraging users to just use one SIM card. He noted that many mobile phone uses still own more than one SIM from different mobile service providers due to the fact that previous promos only apply to those within the same network.

“With the SUPERUNLI ALLTXT25, users only have to own a Globe SIM to send SMS to other users including those from the competing telecommunications firm,” Bithos said.

Meanwhile, Smart Communications has also recently introduced a new series of text promos. One of these is the SMARTalk Unli Call & Text 100, which is unlimited calls and text within their network (Smart and Talk N Text) for four days, or P25 per day.

This would be most cost effective service for Smart users who want to make unlimited calls to those within the same network. However, Smart has yet to offer an unlimited service that allows for sending of free SMS to Globe.

Competition for the mobile telecommunications market in the Philippines remains tough as only Globe and Smart remain.

In March this year the Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Company (PLDT), the parent firm of Smart, acquired a majority stake of Digital Telecommunications Philippines, which owns Sun Cellular, the third player in the mobile communications business. This effectively makes PLDT the biggest company in the domestic telecommunications space.

Globe Telecom has 26.1 million mobile subscribers while Smart has 45 million mobile subscribers.

Both Globe and Smart have also acknowledged that they also need to expand to other non-voice and SMS services to improve its revenue stream. Both have been investing heavily on their mobile Internet services, launching their own 4G infrastructure.

What is SMS Advertising?

SMS advertising – using text messages to market products or services – is a valuable new tool in any company’s promotional kit.

It relies on our continuing obsession with text messaging and our love of our mobiles, which continues to grow without any signs of stopping. But what advantages can SMS advertising, bulk SMS, web to SMS and business SMS have for a business?

Text messaging allows information to be sent to groups of people quickly and conveniently in a similar way to email, making it an increasing popular e-marketing channel. So bulk SMS and SMS advertising are quick, cheap and cost-effective – an attractive option.

Then there’s the personal touch that SMS advertising can bring. Because mobile phones have a very personal nature, SMS advertising can be a powerful tool – even though bulk SMS is sent to many people, each individual will feel the SMS advertising has come to their phone alone.

Business SMS has a further advantage in that, like all bulk SMS messages, it gets to people where they are at that moment, even on the move. Most people take their mobile phones everywhere – meaning they can be effective for time-sensitive SMS advertising messages.

It’s also true that people generally read every business SMS message they get, unlike junk mail, spam or adverts which can be ignored.

Usually, bulk SMS and business SMS are sent as web to SMS messages. Web to SMS messages send SMS advertising messages from your PC to mobile phones, hence web to SMS. Web to SMS is quick and convenient for the user, with the web to SMS message arriving rapidly on the recipient’s mobile with little effort from the web to SMS user.

Marketing is a requirement by each company due to their need to grow their business and make clients. SMS advertising for the range of companies from different sectors has increased. Everyone from the insurance, banks, construction, software etc are all using the bulk SMS to cater to their needs. Advertising here is basically telling about the discounts, new products, promotional activities etc. With the use of bulk SMS advertising you can save money and time as it will reach directly to the sender without any trouble.

The messages in it are short but do provide in-depth information which is useful for the customer. The messaging has popularized as it does not trouble the customer. And even if the mobile is switched off the message will definitely get through after its getting switched on. The technology is so simple and trouble free that there is no need of extra software to communicate to the clients and anybody with knowledge of the computer can use it to deliver messages. Group SMS is a method in which a number of people are send messages in one go. It is a service availed by a number of enterprises as it is quick and easy. In it you can make end number of groups like family, friends etc and send message to any group. It is a great facility to send messages to an end number of people with a click of button.

Is "unlimited" texting in the Philippines really true?

Our website's free SMS service was put to a complete stop this morning when two of our modems encountered an error. I was working remotely so I checked the server using remote desktop connection. At first I thought "this might be a problem with the database connection or probably a hardware issue". But, when I did the initial troubleshoot, I found no clue on what caused the problem - error logs show nothing at all.

Then it occurred to me, "could it be that the network provider blocked the SIM from sending messages?". I was still kind of laughing at myself to think of it as a possible issue since I enrolled these SIM cards on their "unlimited" text promos which should last for 5 days and its not even the 3rd day yet.

To my disbelief, I was there reading a text message from Globe that reads: "Your number has been detected to be sending a high volume of text messages. As a precaution, your Unlitxt / Supertxt registration is temporarily blocked." then I went ahead and thought Smart would send the same message, but there was none. However, when I try to send a text message, it would fail even if there was still 500 pesos worth of credit - no doubt my number was banned from sending any text messages. I called their customer service and that's when I confirmed that my number was banned due to high volume of SMS messages being sent.

Unlimited TEXT promos ARE NOT TRUE and there is not even any "fine print" that state the amount of text messages allowed to be sent while your number is still enrolled in their so called "UNLIMITED" promo.

How do we define "unlimited" then?

In the dictionaries: Not limited; having no bounds; boundless;Undefined; indefinite; not bounded by proper exceptions; as, unlimited terms.

There is no other meaning for the word "Unlimited" that pertains to something that has a "LIMIT".

For now, we are still negotiating with their representatives on the limit of the text messages allowed every 24 hours.
